The Sony PXW-FS7M2 XDCAM Super 35 Camera System is a professional 4K acquisition platform featuring a Super 35mm EXMOR sensor with 14 stops of latitude and a wide color gamut. A primary hardware evolution is the integrated locking E-mount, which provides increased structural integrity for heavy cine-zooms and reduces lens play while maintaining full electronic communication. This mount remains compatible with native E-mount lenses and adapts to PL, EF, Leica, and Nikon systems via optional adapters.

Strategically positioned behind the mount is an electronic variable ND system, offering a stepless range from 2 to 7 stops alongside three user-definable presets. This allows for precise exposure management without altering depth of field or introducing color shifts. The magnesium alloy body weighs four pounds and features an ergonomic SmartGrip and a redesigned viewfinder/mic holder mount based on a 15mm rod system for improved modularity and level operation.

Internal recording capabilities include DCI 4K (4096 x 2160) and UHD 4K (3840 x 2160) at up to 59.94 fps, and HD up to 180 fps. Supported codecs include XF-AVC Intra and XF-AVC Long (10-bit 4:2:2 for HD; 10-bit 4:2:2 or 8-bit 4:2:0 for UHD) and MPEG-2 for HD workflows. The system utilizes dual XQD media slots for simultaneous or relay recording.

Signal processing is divided into Cine-EI mode, offering three color grading spaces for high-end production, and Custom mode, supporting Rec.709 and Rec.2020 standards. Monitoring supports 10-bit 4:2:2 output via HDMI or SDI with applied LUTs. Advanced integration for Genlock, Timecode, and RAW/ProRes external recording is available through the optional XDCA-FS7 extension unit.
