Sony BURANO 8K: Technical and Operational Analysis
Designed for solo-operating and maximum mobility in cine-style environments, the Sony BURANO integrates an 8.6K Full-Frame CMOS sensor into a compact body, optimized for integration as a B or C camera within VENICE workflows. The sensor delivers 16 stops of dynamic range and a Dual-Base ISO 800/3200 system, with an exposure latitude ranging from 6 stops over to 10 stops under 18% middle gray.
Lens and Stabilization
The camera features the same PL-mount and E-mount system as the VENICE series. The PL-mount supports Cooke/i metadata and ZEISS eXtended Data, while the E-mount enables Fast Hybrid AF (phase/contrast detection) and Human Eye AF. The BURANO introduces internal image stabilization (IBIS) for the first time in the digital cinema sector: 3-axis (pitch, yaw, roll) for PL lenses and 5-axis (adding x, y) for E-mount lenses. An integrated electronically variable ND filter is present, with a range from 0.6 to 2.1 (7 stops).
Recording Formats and Performance
The system supports capture up to 8.6K 30 fps in Full-Frame, 6K 60 fps (FF crop), 5.8K Super35, and 4K 120 fps (S35 crop). Internal codecs include:
X-OCN LT: 16-bit RAW format with optimized bitrate for advanced color grading.
XAVC H: new standard based on the H.265 codec for 8K efficiency.
XAVC-I and XAVC-L: for UHD 4K and HD resolutions.
Interface and Storage
The unit features a removable VF/LCD system with touchscreen functionality and a "Home" button for quick access to the "big six" parameters (FPS, EI, Shutter, ND, Look, WB), maintaining operational consistency with the CineAlta line. Storage relies on a dual slot for CFexpress Type B cards, alongside an SD slot for utility functions. The design is optimized for the use of Sony TOUGH cards in 960 and 1920 GB versions.
